Organized by the Cité du design, the XIIth Saint-Étienne International Design Biennial takes place from April 6 to July 31, 2022 on the theme of Bifurcations. This theme was born from an intuition about a widespread desire among designers to “change society”, to “reorient the future”.
The historic, unprecedented crisis of COVID-19 precipitated this collective awareness: on March 17, 2020, France radically bifurcated, and in record time, the course of our lives changed, experimenting in our turn the generalized slowdown. The experience of confinement lived worldwide, at the same time, has become exceptional and overwhelming.
From this ordeal, thinking about bifurcations within the framework of the XIIth International Design Biennial of Saint-Étienne 2022 becomes not a simple exercise but a challenge that mobilizes the entire design profession and its allies, to open up an essential cultural debate at the heart of our techno-industrial society.
